Christopher Nolan to Interstellar’s Black Hole Consultant: ‘It’s A Good Thing You Were Right’

Director/co-writer Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic Interstellar is celebrating its 10th anniversary with an IMAX Exclusive Limited Engagement (it opened December 6, 2024), as well as a Collector’s Edition 4K Ultra HD set that arrives tomorrow, December 10, 2024.

In honor of that, IGN can exclusively reveal a portion of a new behind-the-scenes featurette included in the bonus content of the 10th Anniversary limited edition set (which you can pre-order here).

The featurette, “The Future Is Now: A Look Back at Interstellar,” explores the impact of the film a decade later through new interviews with Nolan, producer Emma Thomas, executive producer Kip Thorne, and co-writer Jonathan Nolan.

In IGN’s exclusive preview, which can be viewed via the player above or the embed below, Nolan and Thorne – a theoretical physicist who consulted on the film – discuss the development of what turned out to be the film’s prophetic black hole visuals.

During pre-production, Thorne wanted to speak directly with the visual effects team about designing the look of the black hole – something Nolan was initially reluctant to grant as he feared there would be “too many cooks” involved.

But out of respect for Thorne, Nolan ultimately relented and, as he recalls in the look back featurette, is glad he did.

“Years after the film was released, to see the front page of The New York Times, first image of a black hole and it does look like what they came up with,” Nolan recalled. “I called Kip when I saw the picture and said, ‘It’s a good thing you were right.”

The Interstellar 10th Anniversary Collector’s Edition set includes the film on both 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Disc, as well as a third Blu-ray with more than two hours of new and legacy bonus content.

The set also includes access to a Digital copy of the film, reproductions of five costume patches, five theatrical poster reproductions, and a never-before-seen storyboard sequence from the director’s archives.

Full bonus content details are listed here.
