The Minecraft movie is extending its theatrical run with a sing-along release called A Minecraft Movie: Block Party Edition.
Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures announced plans to build upon their already successful time in theaters today. Exact details about how this upgraded version of the hit game-to-movie Minecraft adaptation have yet to be revealed, but Warner Bros. at least says it will encourage audiences to “sing (and meme) along” with the Minecraft Movie’s small selection of songs sung by Jack Black’s Steve. We’ll know more when Block Party Edition showings come to select theaters across North America May 2.
There are likely several factors going into the decision to dig deeper into the Minecraft film’s potential in theaters. Following its premiere earlier this month, A Minecraft Movie has managed to plow through every weekend by reaching a new milestone. Its first weekend alone brought in a total of more than $301 million worldwide as it quickly glided its way to $500 million and $700 million. It’s been a quick but long road to that legendary $1 billion status, and at a current global total of $816,566,661 (according to Box Office Mojo), Warner Bros. and Legendary want an extra kick.
The extra push from A Minecraft Movie: Block Party Edition will also double down on the memes that helped propel it to its successful status in the first place. Upon its release, Minecraft players flocked to the theater to cause havoc as they belted out references to the Chicken Jockey, Steve, Crafting Tables, and so much more. Chaos got so out of control that one fan managed to sneak a real-life chicken into a showing.
As excitement has calmed down, it’s Black’s singing that has emerged as one of the long-lasting A Minecraft Movie memes. The star has a few catchy tunes in the film, but Steve’s Lava Chicken is the track that fans have clung to the most. The cut is so popular that it even managed to debut on the UK’s official chart, securing its spot as the shortest song to ever do so.
Warner Bros. and Legendary are looking to keep up that energy when A Minecraft Movie: Block Party Edition mines into theaters next weekend.
