Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Announce New Directors, No Release Date

The third animated spider-verse film, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has found its directors.

According to an official X post, Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson have been tapped to direct the third film in the animated Spider-Verse trilogy following Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

In a statement to Deadline the directors said, “We have the immense privilege of being part of Miles’ journey from the very beginning, and directing the conclusion to his story is beyond exciting.”

Persichetti and Thompson previously worked on the Spider-Verse films, with Persichetti as one of the directors on Into the Spider-Verse and Thompson as production designer. The former was also an excutive producer on the sequel, Across the Spider-Verse.

Plot details haven’t been revealed yet for the third film, though the second movie ended on a major cliff-hanger, so we’ll hopefully see a resolution to that storyline in the conclusion.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was released in May 2023 and grossed nearly $691 million at the box office. It ended without a resolution and instead promised that a third film would arrive sometime in 2024. However, Beyond the Spider-Verse was delayed and removed from Sony’s release calendar following the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.

With news of two new directors boarding the project, we’re hopefully on our way towards finally getting the third Spider-Verse movie.

IGN reviewed Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and gave it an 8 out of 10, calling it a “worthy follow-up to an all-time classic.”
