Fumito Ueda’s Next Game, Probably Codenamed ‘Project Robot’, Officially Revealed – The Game Awards 2024

Nearly seven years after the release of his last project, Fumito Ueda, the developer best known for Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, announced his next project. It’s currently untitled, but a difficult-to-see bit of text in the teaser today suggested its codename is “Project Robot.”

At The Game Awards 2024, genDESIGN revealed more information on Ueda’s next project, with the reveal trailer showing someone climbing a massive humanoid mech while a distorted robot voice counted down time until a shockwave hit. Upon reaching the top of the mech, the person mounted the head and disconnected it from the body, flying into the air above a coming shadowy shockwave in time to avoid its destruction.

And…that’s it. There’s a list of credits for developers working on this game that we’re still trying to puzzle out (it’s very difficult to read! maybe on purpose?), and we know from the logo that it’s being supported by Epic Games. But there’s nothing here resembling a release window or any other information for now. Stay tuned, I guess?

This is Ueda’s fourth project he will be directing since 2016 when he and his studio genDESIGN Co. LTD released The Last Guardian for PlayStation 4. In our review of The Last Guardian, IGN wrote: “The Last Guardian is a beautiful, melancholy game filled with the highest highs, and the lowest lows.”
